When your boat’s outboard motor becomes swamped or fully submerged in salt water, quick action is essential to prevent severe corrosion and costly repairs. Salt water is highly corrosive, and exposure to it can start damaging the engine’s internal components within hours. The salt crystals and moisture accelerate rusting, especially on the aluminium and steel parts of the powerhead, which can lead to irreversible damage if not addressed promptly.

Salt water ingresses into the engine through the cooling system, exhaust, and other openings. Once inside, it begins to corrode metal surfaces, degrade electrical components, and cause pitting on the cylinder walls. The longer the engine remains submerged, the greater the risk of permanent damage, which can mean costly rebuilds or replacements. This is why immediate action is crucial to minimise salt water contact and prevent corrosion from setting in.

The key to effective recovery is to avoid starting the engine. Attempting to run a saltwater-contaminated outboard can circulate salt into the engine’s internals, worsening corrosion and potentially causing further damage. Instead, focus on draining, flushing, and cleaning the engine thoroughly.

What to do right now: First, ensure the engine is turned off and the ignition key removed. If possible, disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts. Next, remove the cowling and drain any water from the lower unit and cooling system. Use fresh water to flush the engine thoroughly, removing salt deposits and residues. After flushing, dry the engine as much as possible and consider applying corrosion inhibitors designed for marine engines. If the engine has been submerged for an extended period, it’s advisable to have a certified marine technician assess and service the outboard to prevent long-term damage.

At EEK Mechanical, we understand the urgency of saltwater immersion. We dispatch certified marine technicians 24/7 to your vessel at its berth, mooring, or ramp. Our team can drain, flush, and inspect your outboard, helping to minimise corrosion and protect your investment. Remember, never start a saltwater-swamped engine — immediate professional intervention is the best course of action.
