Do not start the engine — this is the most important step

If you realise before starting the engine, the contamination is contained to the fuel tank and is straightforward to fix. Starting the engine circulates the wrong fuel through the fuel pump, injectors, and fuel lines — damage that can run to $5,000 or more in a modern diesel.

What No Fuel Station in NZ Can Do for You

Drain the contaminated fuel from your tank — they do not have the equipment or certification
Flush your fuel system — this requires specialist tools and trained technicians
Pay for the recovery — misfuelling is the driver's responsibility, not the station's
Cover the cost of damage from starting on wrong fuel
Provide an insurance claim report — only a certified specialist can document the incident

What they can do: Ask you to move the vehicle away from the pumps, call for assistance on your behalf, and advise you not to start the engine. Some stations have forecourt staff who are trained in basic emergency response. None of them can fix the problem.

What to Do at the Fuel Station Right Now

  1. 1
    Stop fuelling immediately

Remove the nozzle and replace the fuel cap.

  2. 2
    Do NOT start the engine

Not even to move the car. Stay where you are or push to a safe spot.

  3. 3
    Tell the station attendant

They can block off the pump and may help move other vehicles. Ask them to note the time and what fuel went in — this helps your insurance claim.

  4. 4

Why You Still Need a Specialist — NZIFDA Certification

Under New Zealand law, contaminated fuel is a hazardous substance. You as the vehicle owner are legally responsible for ensuring it is handled by a properly licensed operator. Using an unlicensed operator can void your insurance, expose you to environmental liability, and leave you with no legal recourse if the work is done incorrectly.

The NZIFDA (New Zealand Insoluble Fuel Disposal Agency) is the certifying body for misfuel recovery operators in NZ. Certified operators must have:

$2M+ professional indemnity insurance
Valid Dangerous Goods licences
Certified equipment for fuel extraction and system flushing
Compliant waste disposal processes with full documentation
Fixed facility operations (not roadside filler-neck extraction, which is illegal)

Eek Mechanical is NZIFDA certified. Every job includes complete documentation — the insurer-ready report your claims assessor needs.

Will Your Insurance Cover This?

AMI, State, and FMG comprehensive policies cover wrong fuel removal and repair costs. AA Insurance and Vero do not cover fuel contamination. Whatever your insurer, Eek provides the certified report and invoice your claims assessor needs.
